For most of us the answer to the question, “Who am I?” is work in progress. There are times when we are certain who we are, what we like, and what we want; and other times when it seems we have no idea at all.

It has been said that identity isn’t just about what you have done, but what you would like to experience.

Playing “Self Discovery the Michelangelo Way” is a fun game designed to help you discover who you really are. You will be given a series of choices and asked which option resonates most with you.  Some will seem easy . . . black and white, while others will require careful contemplation.

Play the game each week and over time watch how your identity takes form; like Michelangelo chipping away at a block of marble, only to reveal what he already knew was inside.

Included in the game is a polling box in which you can cast your vote and see how your answer compares with others.

Game Rules:

1. Think about each option and decide which one you identify with the most.

2. You may feel like you can identify with both, but choose the one you lean towards.

3. Feel free to think about the options in any way you like: literally, symbolically, metaphorically, preferentially, etc.

4. Claim your identity by voting in the polling box at the bottom of the page, and just for the fun of it see what others are saying.

5. Check in each week to answer the latest question that will reveal your identity.

6. Keep a written record of your responses and watch a description of yourself unfold.

Option: Play this game with your friend or partner. See how well you know each other and build your relationship by sharing aspects of your personality.

Sunset Over the Mississippi River

Dedicated to Rocky Raccoon who met his doom, on the road to Hamilton, Missouri, along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.  Sorry Rocky. May you rest in peace.

Hello Friends,

I’m still on vacation, traveling across the heartland of America. After I left Pittsburgh, Pa to go to college in Utah, my family moved to Kansas City. On this trip we visited my parent’s (both deceased) home, and reminisced about all the summer vacations we spent in this part of the country.

P1010074

…saw this beautiful earth ball. I would love to start one, but where could it be displayed?  If anybody is interested, let me know your thoughts.

…and then visited the Truman Museum in Independence, Kansas

Back on the road again we had a serendipitous surprise, by just happening upon my favorite You Tube Quilting Tutorial and mail order shop, The Missouri Star Quilt Company, in Hamilton, Missouri. I felt like I hit the jack pot! Watch the video below to see the magnitude of this shops popularity. I still can’t believe my luck 🙂 (Yes i do love to quilt…and knit…and cook…and draw).

Pretty amazing huh?

This is me shooing my hubby away to spare him the pain of seeing how much money I was spending.

…and this is what happens when there is a dollar store next to the amazing quilt shop that I spent way too much time in.

P1010090

Driving south from Kansas city on I-70, we came across the small town of Victoria. Looking far off to our left in the middle of farm land, we saw the towering Cathedral of the Plains, which we stopped off to take a look at. We never expected to find what we did on the inside. I’ll I can say is “breathtaking.”

P1010143

Continuing on from there, we passed a field of Mammoth Sunflowers. While we were stopped at the side of the highway taking pictures, the police paid us a visit but left us in peace to enjoy the sight. So beautiful; I could hardly contain myself.

P1010152

Driving through a Parker, Colorado neighborhood, we passed this deer sitting under a tree in the front yard of a home.  At first we thought it was a statue, but nope; it was the real thing. We got out of the car and the sweet thing was not camera shy at all.

Image 5

Well, we finally made it home. It was a wonderful opportunity to see Americana at it’s best, and such an eclectic variety of things, including many beautiful skies. I have one question. How does a person gain 10lbs in 10 days? I feel like this poor cat who obviously is feeling the effects of too much barbecue.  I’m off to Costco to fill up on fresh fruits, vegetables and organic chicken. It’s nice to be home

That’s all for  now. Until next time, may you find your cup half full 🙂

If you have been playing along, hold onto your seats, because this week’s question is a “thinker.” Now that you have the hang of the game, it’s time to throw in an “either or” that will cause you to dig deep into your psyche. Have fun :-0  images

I Need to Vent!

Dear friends,
Love this post from Elena Selivan about the dangers of inflammation in the body due to unhealthy living and stress. I especially like what she says about seeking rhythm rather than balance. It’s a fresh way of looking at finding peace in our daily lives. Everybody needs to vent sometimes especially about the things that are most important to us. You go Elena!!!
Until next time, may you find your cup half full 😉

Last night I sprained my ankle right before leaving for vacation. I’m looking at it as a Wabi Sabi experience. Ha!  I’ll be gone for the next couple of weeks but will be posting pictures along the way.

What are You Doing the Rest of your Life?

“What are You Doing the Rest of Your Life” performed by Milt Jackson. Click on the arrow to listen while you read

The year was 1973. As was often the case, my friends and I were hanging out in one of their basements listening to this album. Kind of unusual for a 16 year old, but what can I say; we were cool.

1970s_puzzle2021

“What are You Doing the Rest of Your Life,” is one of the more melancholy songs on this great album, and guaranteed to put you into a pensive mood. Listening to jazz, pondering the big questions, we asked ourselves, What will we be doing the rest of our lives.

Here I am 40 years later, and I am still asking myself the same question. What am I going to do with the rest of my life?

I have come to realize, after meeting with people of all ages for the past several years, that this is a question many have on their mind.

Do you remember being asked in elementary school what you wanted to be when you grew up? I recently talked with an eight year-old who was worried about how he was going to get into an ivy league college so that he could be a marine biologist when he grew up.

I don’t know how common it is for eight year-olds to have such concerns; perhaps it just evidence of how competitive our world has become.

images

Some people, like Picasso, have a clearly defined sense of who they are, what they want to do, and how they’re going to do it at every stage of their lives.

However, a  large percentage don’t have a clue, or are afraid to follow their hearts. Others let family, friends, and society tell them who they are and what they will do.

Whether you’re in elementary school, high school, or a college graduate; whether you’re in a mid-life crisis or facing retirement, the question remains: “What are you going to do for the rest of your life?”

Howard Buffet

Howard Buffet

Warren Buffet’s son, Howard G. Buffet is writing a book called “40 Chances,” set to be released in October 2013 (I have pre-ordered my copy). Being Howard Buffet, he has his hands in many pots, but is particularly interested in agriculture and solving world hunger.

Once, while attending a meeting, it occurred to him that a farmer has roughly forty chance to harvest a high yield crop; forty years being the average career span of a farmer.

He then thought that forty years doesn’t just apply to farmers; it applies to us all. We each have roughly forty years to make a contribution and leave our legacy. Interesting concept huh?

How fast can you count to 40?

That’s a fear based question isn’t it. It’s not about how fast you can produce a high yield crop but…what you consider a high yield crop to be, and whether or not you are living your life in such a way that you will obtain your desired results.

It involves making mistakes, and not just learning from them but implementing what you’ve learned. It means making choices that take you toward what you value most.

images

The “Whats”

Think about what’s most important to you in your life and what you want to achieve. What makes you happy and what are your values? What have you already accomplished and how would you spend your days if money were not an issue?  What are you willing to fight for? What are you grateful for and who do you most admire? What are you drawn to, and how would you change the world if you could? These are big questions worth taking the time to answer.

The “Hows”

Whatever your answers are to the questions above, make sure you…

1. Identify your passion.

2. Surround yourself with people of similar passion.

3. Take action.

4. Always make choices that lead you towards what you value most.

images

Take a trip down memory lane with me by listening to the end of this song and contemplate what you are going to be doing the rest of your life.

That’s all for this week. I’m heading out of town next Friday, and will be posting pictures from my vacation. Stop back in on Thursday for the next round of Self Discovery the Michelangelo Way.

Until then, may you find your cup half full 🙂
