Pioneers of Peace

LOGO

Pioneers of Peace is the humanitarian arm of Barbara Scoville, LCSW.

It is where personal growth, community, and resilience intersect.

Definition of a Pioneer of Peace:

1. Those who walk a path cleared by love.

2. Those who walk; not just talk.

Our Purpose

Pioneers of Peace is a community of those who feel a call to make a positive difference in the world.

As Pioneers of Peace, we envision a global circle of resilience created by the synergy between givers and receivers.

Mission Statement

As Pioneers of Peace, we are dedicated to the promotion of human development and resilience through the practices of mindfulness, compassion, and altruism.

We choose optimism over cynicism and recognize the power of our collective gifts and talents as effective methods to alleviate suffering and elevate consciousness, individually, locally, and globally.

We make a personal commitment to our individual growth, understanding that we are all connected.

We don’t ask of the world what we won’t do ourselves.

We believe giving back is the strongest evidence of resilience; therefore, as Pioneers of Peace:

We Walk, Not Just Talk.

It is possible the next Buddha will not take the form of an individual. The next Buddha may take the form of a community, a community practicing understanding and loving kindness, a community practicing mindful living.

Current Projects

  • Knit for Peace SLC

Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, with followers all over the country, we are “Metta Knitters.” Metta is the Pali word for the practice of offering loving kindness. We share our talents with others through compassionately made items, gifted in the spirit of shared humanity and kindness.

Recent projects include “Honoring Navajo Women Elders Cowl Project” and “We See You, Sunflowers.”

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.”

    ~ Margaret Mead

  • Cottonwood Mindfulness Sangha

“A Sangha is a community of people, supporting each other in mindful living. Our gatherings are an opportunity for practicing together joyfully. The essence of a Sangha is awareness, understanding, acceptance, harmony, and love.”
    ~Thich Nhat Hanh

Our meetings are non-partisan and secular; however because mindfulness finds its roots in the teachings of the historic Buddha, we study Buddhist philosophy and use some terminology from the Pali language. We gather the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of each month.

“Alone, we are vulnerable, but with friends to work with, we can support each other. We cannot go to the ocean as a drop of water - we would evaporate before reaching our destination. But if we become the river, if we go as a Sangha, we are sure to arrive at the ocean…”

    ~Thich Nhat Hanh
